Hagler (“Marvelous” Marvin) is born in Newark, New Jersey.

Raised by a single mother, Marvelous Marvin Hagler moves with his family to Brockton in 1970, begins boxing as an amateur, is discovered by local trainers Goody and Pat Petronelli, and turns professional in 1973. He becomes middleweight champion of the world (1980*-87), legally changes his name in 1982, and engages in two especially memorable fights in 1985* and 1987.* Hagler once says of himself, “If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That’s all I am. I live it.” He retires with a record of 62-3-2 and 52 knockouts, goes on to stars in Italian action movies, and dies in Bartlett, New Hampshire, on March 13, 2021.
